Northern Soul gets no further North than this. Last year a cult Finnish group hooked up with a transplanted US singer and decided to record a vintage sounding Soul tune. The band had been unceremoniously knocking out grizzly jams on limited 45s for years and this one could well have been just another bowstring. However, CD copies If This Ain't Love smashed open the Helsinki charts, becoming Finland's big song of the summer - and when they pressed the vinyl version it exploded onto Britain's Northern Soul scene, selling out instantly. Gilles Peterson even ranked it as one of the year's best tracks on his Radio 1 show. Their album proves that the venture was no fluke – in ten huge productions they round up every stray vibe a Soul LP should boast, from the bustle of Hitsville soundalikes My Four Leaf Clover and Invisible Man to the heavy swell of the ballad No One's Gonna Love You. Nicole may not have the rangiest pipes, but with floor-packing arrangements like these, who's nitpicking?

Without letting go of the funk, this Timmion release head towards the soulier side of things. Meters playing on a Curtom record. Sort of. Read on.

Nicole Willis is from New York but her musical career has taken her worldwide. She started out in London in the mid-80's where she teamed up with members of The Brand New Heavies.

Later, having returned to NYC she was part of the earliest line-up of Deee-lite. She then toured with The The, and in the early 90's she was in the band Repercussions. Records were released on Mo' Wax and together with the legendary Curtis Mayfield, the band recorded a version of Mayfield's "Let’s Do It Again".

The Soul Investigators should be familiar to Uppers readers, as we have given this Finnish band some well deserved coverage over the years. If you haven't followed our earlier recommendations yet, it's high time you check out these funk meisters.

During the summer of 2005, the 45 "If This Ain't Love" became much talked about on various soul forums on the internet, and rightfully so. And now the album "Keep Reachin' Up" is here… And I like it.

Most songs on the album have slightly more edge and a somewhat harder beat than laid back summer breeze feel of the previously released 45 "If This Ain't Love". Still, very soulful and a large chuck of that radio-friendly feel to it. Tunes like these could sound too slick and mellow in the wrong hands but fear not dear reader, things never get bland and I guess backing band The Soul Investigators has a lot to do with that… Those guys have the funk and they're bringing it to the table. The organ solos on "A perfect kind of love" and "Holdin' on" sends shivers down my old spine.

A very good effort from the Timmion label. Keep your eyes on this label. You could do a lot worse.

A bold step forward for the deep funk groove of Timmion Records -- way more than just a "funk band meets diva" set, and instead a fully-formed soul record that's one of the greatest indies we've heard in years! Nicole Willis has already won our hearts with earlier records, but here she's working with the Soul Investigators to carve out an album of classic brilliance -- a 70s-styled set that would easily stand alongside the best from King, Brunswick, or Curtom from years back. And in fact, the Curtom reference is especially strong on the few tracks that feature added strings -- used here in a really righteous way that push the sound past simple funky combo backings, and into a rolling, soaring mode that would have made Curtis Mayfield proud! But if you're a fan of harder funk, don't worry at all -- because there's plenty of tunes here that maintain a rougher funky 45 groove -- mixed in alongside the more ambitious numbers to make for an instant classic of an album. Production is by the enigmatic Didier, backings are by the tremendous Soul Investigators, and even Jimi Tenor gets in a bit of organ and vocals on the set! Titles include "If This Ain't Love", "Keep Reachin Up", "Feeling Free", "Blues Downtown", "My Four Leaf Clover", "A Perfect Kind Of Love", "No One's Gonna Love You", "Holdin On", "Invisible Man", and "Soul Investigators Theme".

Tähän asti Soul Investigatorsin puuhastelu Didier's Sound Spectrumissa ja Ostari Njengissä on vaikuttanut kiinnostavammalta kuin emobändin dogmaattinen retroilu. Keep Reachin' Up muuttaa kaiken.

Nicole Willis ja Soul Investigators ovat kuin luodut toisilleen. Biisit kumpuavat 60- ja 70-lukujen soulin maailmasta ja levyn soundiin on saatu tallennettua ajan äänitteille ominainen rosoisuus ja lämpö. Piano ja urut kuulostavat erityisen rouheilta, rummuista puhumattakaan. Korva lepää kuin lämpimässä kylvyssä.

Minkään maailman soundeilla ei tosin ole mitään merkitystä, jos biisit eivät toimi. Tällä levyllä ne toimivat. Teemat ovat vanhoja tuttuja: rakkaus, musiikki, arkisen uurastuksen päättävä biitillle antautuminen, erilaiset tanssit, jne. Nicolen ilmaisusta puuttuu kuitenkin se pantomiimin fiilis, joka välittyy suuresta osasta muita uusvanhaa soulia vääntävistä taiteilijoista.

Samaan tapaan kuin hieman eri korttelissa puuhaavan Faith Evansin levylllä aiemmin tänä vuonna, niin myös Willisin laulut tulevat eletystä elämästä. Se on kaunista, etenkin sellaisella musiikin alueella, jossa raha nykyään tehdään toistamalla korneja manerismeja turtumukseen saakka.

Musiikkiin mahtuu suurtakin suurempi sydän, jos sille antaa tilaa lyödä. Tällä saralla ei tehdä missään tämän parempaa musiikkia tällä hetkelllä. Siitä kiitos Nicolelle, Soul Investigatorsille ja Didierille.

Yli kolmekymmentä vuotta sitten Charles Williams -niminen amerikkalainen viulisti-laulaja seurasi naista pohjoiseen Suomeen ja julkaisi vuonna -76 osaksi kotimaisten muusikoiden kanssa äänitetyn albumin Love is a Very Special Thing. Yhdeksi maamme etsityimmistä levyistä muuttunut keräilyharvinaisuus oli myös kaikkien aikojen ensimmäinen suomalainen soul-levy, ja tähän hetkeen asti myös viimeinen laatuaan. Ainakin kunnes Brooklynista maailman kautta Lahteen miehen perässä päätynyt laulaja Nicole Willis päätti tehdä näinä päivinä harvinaisen kulttuuriteon ja äänittää Matinkylän funk-ylpeyden, The Soul Investigatorsin kanssa toisen mokoman.

Ensimmäinen single levyltä, kesällä julkaistu If This Ain’t Love (Don’t Know What Is), on saanut Iso-Britannian northern-soul-piirit hurmioon ja myynyt jo kolme painosta seiskatuumaisia loppuun. Keep Reachin’ Up ei ole kuitenkaan mikään yhden hitin ympärille kyhätty löyhä kehikko, vaan jotain aivan muuta – nimittäin moderni täysverinen soul-albumi. Kun Feeling Freen ensitahtien isaachayesmaiset jousivallit alkavat sahaamaan vastustamattoman Detroit-kompin päällä voi kuuntelijan olohuone muuttua varomatta aamuöiseksi tanssilattiaksi. Ja jatkoa seuraa, nimittäin pääosa levystä on Motownia peilailevan 60-luvun tanssisoulin tyyliin tehtyjä, kepeän svengaavia kappaleita. Tämä on yllättävää The Soul Investigatorsilta, yhtyeeltä joka tunnetaan maailmanlaajuisesti nimenomaan raa’asta laskiämpäri-funkistaan. Tällä levyllä bändin soitto ja sovitukset ovat vapautuneempia ja mielikuvituksekkaampia kuin koskaan, johtuen osaksi tuottaja/muusikko Didier Selinin autenttisesta ja kurinalaisesta tuotannosta, jonka kautta musiikista on saatu yhtä aikaa sekä ilmavaa että intiimiä.

Kyllä levyltä löytyy funkiakin – Holdin’ On on tuleva tanssilattiaklassikko, jossa Nicole Willisin sielukkaat vokaalit kohtaavat bändin tiukimmillaan, tai pitäisi oikeastaan sanoa timmeimmillään. Hitaan laahaava Blues Downtown ja psykedeelinen deep soul mestariteos No One’s Gonna Love You edustavat suvantokohtia levyn armottoman bilemateriaalin seassa. Ms. Willisillä on kantava ja täyteläinen ääni, joka tavoittaa kussakin biisissä haetun tunnelman loistavasti. Lyriikat ovat mukavan kotikutoisia ja klassisista soultähdistä Willis eroaakin siinä, ettei hänen musiikistaan välity lainkaan diivailun maneereja vaan lämmintä sympaattisuutta, joka ei vaadi höysteekseen ylinäyteltyä melodraamaa – täytyy kuitenkin toivoa, että livenä hänessä nähtäisiin myös hieman musikin henkeen sopivaa show-henkisyyttä.

Keep Reachin’ Up on suomalaisella musiikkikentällä harvinaista herkkua ja ainutlaatuinen levy, jonka toivoisi löytävän kuulijoita muidenkin kuin soul-musiikin suurkuluttajien parissa. Levyn kesto on sopivasti vain 40 minuuttia, aivan kuin joskus aikoinaan kun niitä tehtiin kokonaisuuksiksi eikä vain CD:n täytteeksi.

Après le succès du single "If this ain't love", classé quatrième du top 50 finlandais pendant plusieurs semaines et déjà épuisé malgré une réédition, le nouvel album de Nicole Willis devrait assurer à la soul-diva un succès bien mérité. Il a été réalisé en collaboration avec le groupe finlandais The Soul Investigators , plutôt connus pour leur son deep funk. Le résultat est un album soul qui affirme sa parenté avec les productions King, Brunswick et Curtom.

With the addition of Nicole Willis, the Soul Investigators have found a voice that's enabled them to explore new territory into the disco tinged world of modern and northern soul. For me not every track is the outright classic I expected, as two or three tracks few were skipped through but when they hit it right they REALLY hit it right! And there is on this record some of the best soul cuts recorded this side of the 1970's. Definately one to buy
